Wondering why an author would have a photo of a sailboat?
It's my why. My dream. I love the ocean and more importantly the wind in my sails pulling me through the water. I love the speed, the elegance. All of it. Why do you care? Well, you don't yet. Everyone talks about your why. What it is and why it matters. But before you read on, I highly recommend you take a long hard look at yours. What is it? We're going to use mine for reference as we travel through this process. So when I mention sailing and salty air, just replace it with whatever you want. Okay, we're going to head down two-year-old lane for a second. I want you to repeat this exercise, writing down the answers, I'll be looking for how many why's you get through.
I want to live on the ocean and travel the world with my family. Why? Because I think it's important to not only read about but experience other cultures and countries. Because I love adventure and the idea of picking up anchor often and starting new adventures, is my idea of bliss. Why? Because it's true freedom. It's something everyone should experience. Most people are born and die in the same place! Let alone travel the world. It's sad. Why? Because they missed out on the beauty and wonder of the world.
Okay so it turns out I can actually do this longer than I thought. I could keep going. But I've had a lot of time to think about it. So next step... Envision what it will feel like. Close your eyes and feel it. Then write it down. For me, I can feel the warm sun on my skin, the cool ocean spray, I can smell the salty air and hear the gulls. The shouts of excitement as the kids realize dolphins are swimming along the bow. Can you feel it? See it? Believe you'll be there.
Okay you have your why, so now what?
Now we talk about boot camp. I called it this for a reason. It's 8 weeks of intense training. It's do or die and you need to cling to that why in order to make it to the other side. But if you do, you'll have a handle on your marketing, connections to influencers in your genre, a strategy to keep your business growing, and you'll have built up some discipline, in the end it will be up to you if you truly have it or if it was merely inflicted by me and the money you put down to be here.
